Annotation:The first part of this tutorial shows why it is important to properly design contact experiments (e.g. hardness tests, indentation tests, scratch tests) for coatings (particularly thin films) or similar surface structures as a result of surface treatments. A Rockwell hardness test HRC as well as a scratch test according to DIN EN 1071-3 on a 20 µm TiN coating will be analyzed to this end.
The second part of this tutorial demonstrates how such mechanical surface tests can easily be dimensioned for coatings by means of the software Test Optimizer.
