It has long been a topic of discussion why different mechanical tests like uniaxial tensile, rheological shear test or contact experiments (nanoindentation, scratch) or even the same test performed in quasi-static or dynamic mode result in partially dramatic differences with respect to the mechanical parameters being extracted from these tests.

The talk will elaborate why this is the case and how the various tests can be properly linked respectively analyzed such that generic parameter identification is possible rather than more or less qualitative testing. The physical and mathematical extensions necessary to describe the effects playing a role in this are quite demanding and surprisingly holistic.

However, as an interesting by-product we will learn how even such complex things like tribological processes can be understood much better with these new concepts.

The talk will furthermore introduce techniques and procedures for reliable long term material prediction out of relatively simple mechanical testing in connection with new sophisticated models based on first principle simulation.

Finally an outlook will be given how these procedures could be developed to new standards for more reliable and lasting truly physical parameter identification.
